Watch out for your Meta Description in Magento Product Page
We stumbled on this yesterday when working on a client’s project, that the meta description is pulled from the content of the product description. The product description from client’s site is very long, if it weren’t for this we probably would have missed it.
We are no SEO expert from SEO marketing point of view, but our knowledge on Semantic Web (which we are pretty knowledgeable ) and the time we have spent on Google Webmaster Central makes us believe that it’s a bad idea to have 100+ words in the Meta Description.
A look at the product page from the admin, we see the Meta Description is left empty by client. The problem is gone once we entered something in the meta keywords.
Not sure if it’s a new feature (or bug?!) in Magento Version 1.2.0.3, and we don’t remember seeing it in previous versions.
You shouldn’t leave your meta description empty especially if your product description is long, write something descriptive and relevant to the product instead as it wil help your Magento site’s SEO a little bit.
